Amid a large turnout of family, friends, and local residents, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah called for a full and independent investigation into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo during the late politician’s burial in Lumakanda, Kakamega County.

Omtatah described the funeral as a solemn occasion that brought together Kenyans from across political and social divides to honor Jirongo’s decades-long contribution to public life.

“It was a heavy yet reflective moment as we gathered to celebrate the life of a leader who impacted many,” he said.

The senator emphasized that the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s passing must be clarified, underlining the need for transparency and accountability.

He directly appealed to President William Ruto, noting that as Commander-in-Chief, the President has a responsibility to ensure the nation knows the truth.

“The family deserves closure, and Kenyans deserve answers. The buck stops with the President to ensure accountability and to tell Kenyans who killed Jirongo,” Omtatah stated.

Jirongo, a former Cabinet Minister and influential political figure, had a long-standing presence in Kenyan politics, serving multiple terms as Lugari MP and remaining active in national debates.

His leadership spanned several decades, earning him recognition among grassroots supporters and political peers alike.

During the ceremony, Omtatah extended condolences to Jirongo’s family, including Mama Anne Kanini, Mama Christine Nyokabi, Mama Anne Lanoi, and his children.

He prayed for strength and comfort for relatives coping with the loss. “Poleni sana. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.

The call for an independent inquiry aligns with broader concerns over political accountability and transparency in Kenya, where the deaths of public figures often prompt public debate on investigative processes.

Omtatah’s statements signal heightened attention to ensuring that Jirongo’s death is properly examined and that justice, if warranted, is delivered.

As Kakamega County bid farewell to one of its most prominent political leaders, the message from attendees and national figures alike focused on reflection, remembrance, and a shared call for the truth behind his untimely death.
