An ODM Youth League official, Kasmuel McCoure, has urged Kenyan youth, particularly the Gen-Z generation, to actively participate in shaping the policies of the Broad Based Government, asserting that young people were central to the country’s 2024 political realignment.
McCoure made the remarks in a statement shared on X on Tuesday, emphasising the responsibility of youth in ensuring government accountability and institutional reform.
McCoure credited young activists for creating the momentum that led to the formation of the Broad Based Government, despite not holding any official position within the coalition.
He highlighted that nationwide demonstrations and civic engagement by youth were instrumental in compelling political leaders to rethink governance approaches, reflecting a broader trend in Kenya’s political history where youth movements have influenced key transitions, including the post-2010 Constitution reforms.
Addressing criticism from within ODM and other political actors, McCoure dismissed what he called “performative activism” by leaders who did not participate in the 2024 mobilisations.
He argued that such voices should not overshadow the contributions of the youth, who bore the brunt of public demonstrations and navigated the political challenges necessary to achieve the coalition arrangement.
The ODM youth leader also underscored the importance of young Kenyans taking ownership of government performance.
McCoure stated that the Broad Based Government’s ten-point agenda should be monitored and evaluated by the same generation that helped bring it into existence, signalling a commitment to civic oversight and principled engagement rather than passive observation.
In addition, McCoure announced plans to engage with youth wings across the Broad Based Government, starting with UDA, to develop a coordinated blueprint for youth participation in governance.
He urged young citizens to focus on structured involvement in institutions, policy advocacy, and long-term reforms rather than relying solely on street protests or symbolic activism.
His statement comes amid ongoing debates within ODM and the broader opposition about the party’s role in the coalition and the influence of youth-led initiatives on national politics.
McCoure’s remarks highlight a growing recognition of the generational shift in Kenya’s political landscape, where young leaders are increasingly asserting influence over policy direction and accountability.
