The National Police Service has launched a formal investigation into a disturbance that interrupted a church service in Kariobangi North on Sunday, saying early findings show rival groups of youths attempted to force their way into the venue.

The incident drew national attention after reports circulated online claiming officers deployed tear gas inside the sanctuary.

In a statement shared on Sunday, the NPS said the altercation unfolded during a thanksgiving service held for a recently elected ward representative.

Police officers on duty allegedly spotted a group of youths armed with crude weapons approaching the church, prompting them to request backup.

A second group of youths soon arrived, appearing intent on confronting the first group.

Police said the escalating confrontation spilled into the church compound as officers moved to restore order. Six people were injured and taken to hospital, according to the NPS statement.

The service later continued and concluded in the afternoon after calm was restored.

The Service dismissed claims that officers lobbed tear gas into the church, insisting the allegations circulating on social media were inaccurate.

According to the NPS, church leaders confirmed that no tear gas canister was used inside the building.

The disturbance comes at a time when Nairobi has experienced escalating political tensions at grassroots events, including by-elections and community mobilisations.

Such gatherings have often drawn rival supporters, sometimes resulting in confrontations.

Kariobangi and other informal settlements have historically recorded heightened political activity, particularly during competitive ward-level contests.

Police described Sunday’s incident as premeditated and called it a worrying trend targeting public gatherings, especially those held in places of worship.

The NPS emphasised that churches must remain protected spaces, noting Kenya’s long-standing expectations that security agencies safeguard religious institutions.

The Nairobi Regional Police Commander and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have been directed to identify the organisers, determine the motive behind the mobilisation, and recommend possible charges.

Authorities said they will use all available resources to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
