Detectives have traced a white Toyota Probox seen on CCTV at the scene of former politician Hon. Cyrus Jirongo’s fatal crash, revealing a surprising connection.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the vehicle, registration KDJ 564E, belongs to Hon. William Mutai, MCA for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of Nakuru County Assembly.

Investigators confirmed the car is managed by Mutai’s wife.

The Probox had been hired on December 11, 2025, by Denis Kipyegon Koech to ferry his family to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive their son from New Mexico University.

On the return trip, the family stopped at Eagol Petrol Station near Karai, just as Jirongo passed through. Moments later, they heard a loud bang and saw a bus dragging Jirongo’s car.

Eyewitnesses inside the Probox helped illuminate the wreckage for rescue teams before leaving the scene at daybreak, later learning the tragic victim was Jirongo.

The DCI stressed that investigations are ongoing and urged the public to allow detectives to verify all statements.
