Kenya is set to get more reliable electricity after the government signed a major Public Private Partnership (PPP) to expand the national power grid.

The deal brings together Africa50 and PowerGrid, with the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) overseeing the project.

The Principal Secretary for National Treasury, Dr Chris Kiptoo, said the partnership will bring in private investment and technical expertise while protecting public funds.

“This project is key to making electricity more reliable, affordable, and sustainable for Kenyans,” he said.

Two critical transmission corridors are part of the deal. The 400 kV Lessos–Loosuk line will strengthen the grid, support geothermal projects in Baringo, and provide a new route for Lake Turkana wind power.

The 220 kV Kibos–Kakamega–Musaga line will bring high-voltage power to Western Kenya, cutting technical losses and reducing load shedding.

Dr Kiptoo added that the project will also support renewable energy, industrial growth, and commercial activity, while improving power supply to homes, schools, hospitals, and businesses.

KETRACO will manage the construction and ensure standards are met.

Once complete, the lines are expected to make blackouts a thing of the past and strengthen Kenya’s energy security for years to come.
