Senior Counsel Elisha Ongoya had Kenyans talking on Friday night after his lively interview on NTV.

The lawyer opened up about his personal values and the bigger picture behind Kenya’s fight against corruption.

“I have never compromised a judge. I have never compromised a magistrate. I have never even bribed a policeman,” Ongoya said, calmly but firmly, painting a picture of someone who sticks to principles no matter the pressure.

Ongoya used the platform to question whether passing more laws or creating more institutions can really stop corruption.

“The corruption that we have in this country today will not possibly be resolved through new laws and new institutions,” he said.

Instead, he argued, the key is personal responsibility.

“It will be resolved when people review their moral armament and commit to doing the right thing, particularly when the temptation is most present,” he added.

The lawyer’s comments come at a time when Kenyans are frustrated with slow-moving corruption cases and repeated scandals in public service.

Ongoya’s message is simple: fighting graft is not just about rules on paper—it’s about what each person chooses to do when nobody is watching.

By the end of the interview, it was clear Ongoya wanted to spark reflection rather than finger-pointing.

For him, a shift in mindset could be the real game-changer in Kenya’s long-running corruption debate.
