Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna on Tuesday publicly apologised to former President Uhuru Kenyatta during the burial of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, addressing recent criticisms by some party leaders.
The apology came amid claims that Uhuru has been attempting to influence ODM’s internal affairs ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking in his capacity as the party’s spokesperson, Sifuna acknowledged that certain ODM leaders had made statements portraying Uhuru as divisive.
He sought forgiveness on behalf of the party, describing the remarks as “thoughtless” and unappreciative of the former president’s past political support.
“Because I’m still the ODM Secretary General, I want as the spokesperson to apologise to you, Uhuru Kenyatta, and ask for forgiveness on behalf of our party for the insults you have been receiving from various ODM leaders,” Sifuna said, addressing the former president directly.
Sifuna highlighted Uhuru’s role in backing ODM leader Raila Odinga during his presidential bids, urging party members to remember the support rather than dismiss it.
“They have forgotten the much support you offered Raila Odinga when he vied for presidency. Now they want to cut the hand that fed them,” he remarked.
The remarks were delivered in front of mourners, with Uhuru in attendance, underscoring the political sensitivity of the event.
Sifuna also expressed gratitude to Uhuru, acknowledging the former president as one of Raila’s few trusted allies.
“As I apologise on behalf of the thoughtless, I also want to say thank you to you. Thank you for supporting Baba Raila Amolo Odinga, who always said you were among his few true friends,” Sifuna added.
The apology reflects ongoing tensions within ODM, which has seen disagreements over party leadership, alliances, and strategic positioning ahead of the next general election.
By making the statement publicly, Sifuna appeared to reaffirm ODM’s recognition of Uhuru’s contributions while discouraging internal discord
