Kisumu Women Representative Ruth Odinga has sparked speculation about a possible presidential bid in 2027, suggesting she could step in if the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) does not have a clear candidate.
Her remarks came on X while reflecting on the first Christmas without her late brother, the iconic Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga.
Addressing congregants at St. Peter’s Nyamira ACK Church, Ruth Odinga described the emotional service, noting the void left by Raila’s absence.
“There was an unmarked seat whose occupant was missing,” she wrote, highlighting the significance of the late leader’s presence both politically and personally.
She praised Raila for building ODM into a party with national reach, stressing his efforts to include leaders from across Kenya in Cabinet appointments.
Ruth Odinga also condemned recent social media attacks on her brother’s reputation, calling them shameful.
Turning to the future, she positioned herself as a potential leader, telling ODM members, “If you don't find someone suitable within ODM ranks to go for the top seat in 2027, talk to me. I am here. This is a possibility.”
Her message comes amid discussions on succession and leadership within the party, as members consider how to maintain ODM’s national influence.
Ruth Odinga ended her post by wishing Kenyans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2026, signaling both respect for her brother’s legacy and her readiness to engage in the party’s leadership conversations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
