Nandi Senator Kiprotich Cherargei has called on Trans Nzoia County Assembly members to move swiftly to impeach Governor George Natembeya after he skipped the 12th National and County Governments Coordinating Summit at State House, Nairobi.

The summit, chaired by President William Ruto, brought together governors to discuss ways to improve cooperation between national and county governments.

Cherargei accused Natembeya of failing to deliver development in the county, pointing to alleged corruption, poor infrastructure, and tribal politics.

“This governor has nothing to show the people of Trans Nzoia, yet he continues to ignore his responsibilities,” Cherargei said in a statement posted on X.

The senator also pointed to Natembeya’s past as Rift Valley Regional Commissioner under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, claiming that his tenure included impunity and rights violations during forest evictions and other interventions.

Cherargei argued that the governor’s repeated disregard for constitutional duties underscores the need for accountability.

Natembeya was reportedly among several governors, including Siaya’s James Orengo, Migori’s Ochilo Ayacko, and Homa Bay’s Gladys Wanga, who missed the summit.

Cherargei highlighted that Natembeya did not issue any apology for his absence, a move he described as “disrespectful to devolution and the people of Trans Nzoia.”

Under Kenyan law, county assemblies can initiate impeachment proceedings against governors for misconduct, abuse of office, or violation of the Constitution, but the motion must also be approved by the Senate.

Cherargei said that if Trans Nzoia MCAs act, the Senate would likely back the impeachment, protecting devolved governance and ensuring accountability.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of county governors in Kenya, as citizens and oversight bodies increasingly demand transparency and results from devolved administrations.
