Tanzanian Activist Maria Sarungi Blasts AU For Congratulating Samia Suluhu on His Win

Vocal Tanzanian activist Maria Sarungi Tsehai has unleashed a fierce online tirade against African Union Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf. In a scathing X post on November 1, 2025, she accused him of legitimizing President Samia Suluhu Hassan's disputed re-election amid reports of deadly violence.
Sarungi shared graphic videos allegedly showing bodies littered on Dar es Salaam streets, smuggled out despite an internet blackout.
Tanzania's general elections on October 29, 2025, saw Suluhu declared the winner with nearly 98% of the vote on November 1.
The vote followed the disqualification of key opposition figures like ACT-Wazalendo's Luhaga Mpina and treason charges against CHADEMA's Tundu Lissu, sparking protests met with tear gas, live bullets, and a curfew in the capital.
Rights groups, including Human Rights Watch, decried the process as rigged, with stifled media and jailed critics eroding public trust.
Sarungi stated, "Dear World, we have videos of the atrocities committed by
Suluhu Samia
through her mercenaries and rogue security forces. This is just a small part of a street where you will see bodies strewn all over the place!" She appealed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and human rights bodies, adding, "I have a folder of the massacre! Brave men and women have managed smuggle out footage! Tell the bloody dictator to turn on the internet."

Targeting the AU, Sarungi wrote, "Shame on you African Union- there was no election and you congratulated this murderous woman to give her legitimacy! You rendered yourselves irrelevant."
Her post, viewed thousands of times, amplified smuggled footage from a boda boda rider risking his life amid plainclothes enforcers.
