Kisumu County Senator Ruth Odinga has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Emeritus Bishop Philip Sulumeti of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega.

In a statement shared on her official Facebook page on Monday, Odinga extended her condolences to the bishop’s family, the Catholic community, and all Kenyans impacted by his ministry.

Bishop Sulumeti, who served the Church for several decades, was widely recognized for his dedication to faith, education, and peace initiatives across the country.

Odinga described him as a “devoted servant of God” whose leadership left a lasting mark on both the Church and Kenyan society.

During his tenure as the head of the Kakamega Diocese, Bishop Sulumeti spearheaded numerous programs aimed at strengthening Catholic education and community cohesion.

His initiatives included the establishment of schools, support for interfaith dialogue, and mentorship programs for young leaders within the Church.

“On behalf of the people of Kisumu County, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the Catholic faithful, his family, and all who were touched by his ministry,” Odinga wrote.

She added that his legacy would continue to inspire generations of Kenyans, reflecting his commitment to faith and social development.

Catholic faithful in Western Kenya have also begun paying tribute to the late bishop, with local parishes holding special masses and prayer services in his honor.

Bishop Sulumeti’s passing marks the end of an era for the Kakamega Diocese, where he was known for his approachable leadership style and efforts to promote unity within the Church and the broader community.
