The National Police Service (NPS) has announced heightened security measures across the country as preparations intensify for the upcoming by-elections.
The police assured voters of their safety, pledging to protect lives and property throughout the electoral period.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NPS said it had developed a detailed security plan in coordination with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
The plan is designed to ensure that polling stations remain secure and that the process is conducted in a peaceful and credible manner.
The service warned political leaders, supporters, and campaign agents against engaging in any form of violence, hate speech, or incitement, noting that those found culpable would face legal consequences.
“We urge all candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly,” the police said.
Kenya has witnessed sporadic violence in past by-elections, including incidents in Kisumu, Bonchari, and Kabuchai in 2021, where clashes between rival supporters disrupted voting.
The latest police assurance seeks to address growing concerns over potential unrest, especially in closely contested regions.
NPS reaffirmed its neutrality, stating that officers deployed for election duties will act impartially and focus solely on maintaining order.
The service also urged members of the public to report any suspicious activity or attempts to disrupt peace through emergency hotlines—999, 911, and 112—or via the anonymous #FichuaKwaDCI reporting platforms.
In the 2022 General Election, the IEBC recorded lower turnout in constituencies previously affected by election-related unrest.
As campaigns enter their final days, the police are calling for calm and cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure that voters can exercise their democratic rights without intimidation.
The NPS emphasized that maintaining peace during elections is a shared responsibility between security agencies, political actors, and the public.
