Silas Jakakimba, former personal assistant to the late Raila Odinga, has addressed the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), emphasizing a leadership void following the party leader’s death.

Jakakimba stressed that no current member within ODM fully matches Raila’s influence or capacity to guide the party at a national level.

In a statement on X, Jakakimba described Raila Odinga’s personal brand as central to ODM’s prominence, calling it “the overriding, automatic lifeline” that shaped the party’s public and political image in recent years.

He noted that attempts to reposition the party internally, which had been subdued during Raila’s tenure, risk undermining the former prime minister’s legacy.

Jakakimba singled out Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila’s brother, as the most suitable leader to provide direction and maintain ODM’s relevance in national politics.

According to him, Oburu possesses the qualities needed to “captain it to the next frontiers” while ensuring the party continues to play a significant role in the country’s governance.

The statement also clarified the political stance of the Luo community ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Jakakimba confirmed that the community will support President William Ruto, emphasizing that any contrary positions proposed within ODM would not override this consensus.

“For the record, the Luo Nation will support William Ruto in 2027. There is no going back to any streets at this point,” he said.

This position reflects a notable shift in the political alignment of Raila Odinga’s former constituency.

Historically, the Luo community has been closely associated with ODM leadership, particularly under Raila, who maintained strong national and regional influence.

Jakakimba’s statement signals continuity in political engagement while acknowledging the practical limitations in replacing Raila’s unique leadership.

He highlighted the need to prioritize ongoing development projects, stating that Raila’s contributions to governance and national initiatives should remain a central focus for the party and the community.

Jakakimba’s comments come at a time when ODM is navigating both internal restructuring and the broader political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, emphasizing the balance between honoring Raila Odinga’s legacy and addressing emerging political realities.
