Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the National Police Service of orchestrating violence in Narok Town during a campaign event on 24th November 2025.

In a letter addressed to Inspector-General Douglas Kanja, Gachagua alleged that a combination of uniformed officers, plainclothes operatives, and militia were deployed to intimidate him and supporters of the DCP candidate in Narok Town Ward, Hon. Douglas Masikonde.

According to Gachagua, highways leading into and out of Narok were blocked under police orders, while attendees, including women, children, and traders, were allegedly subjected to teargas and physical assault.

He singled out two officers attached to Murang’a County Woman Representative Hon. Betty Maina, claiming they coordinated the operations on the ground.

The former DP referenced previous incidents in Murang’a, highlighting attacks in Kinyona on 27th July and harassment of journalist Muthoni Wa Kirumba on 21st November 2025.

Gachagua suggested that these officers’ repeated involvement in politically charged violence indicates a failure of leadership at the top of the police command.

Gachagua further warned that any escalation of violence ahead of the 27th November by-elections would fall under the Inspector-General’s responsibility.

He demanded that the two officers be withdrawn from Narok and called on Kanja to take immediate action or resign if unable to maintain control of the service.

Narok Town has historically been a politically contested area, with heightened tensions during campaign periods reflecting wider national debates over security, party influence, and electoral integrity.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has consistently emphasized the role of security agencies in ensuring free and peaceful voting processes, particularly in volatile counties.
