Activist Bob Njagi has outlined a sequence of events surrounding his detention in Uganda, revealing that a meeting involving senior military officials occurred days before he and other detainees were relocated to a safe house.

Speaking during an appearance at Citizen TV on Wednesday night, Njagi, the meeting was held on October 20 at a military camp and was chaired by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, a senior officer in the Ugandan military.

“Following that meeting, we were transferred on October 23 to a safe house outside the camp, where we stayed for 14 days before being released,” he said.

Njagi’s account highlights the role of military coordination in detainee management, a topic closely monitored by human rights organisations in the region.

Transfers from detention facilities to temporary safe houses are sometimes conducted for operational security, but critics have raised concerns about transparency and accountability.

Uganda has faced international scrutiny over its treatment of political activists, with reports indicating that hundreds of activists and opposition figures have been detained in the past five years.

Njagi did not provide specifics about what was discussed during the meeting or the reasons for the relocation.

The activist’s revelations are likely to fuel calls for clearer oversight of military involvement in civilian matters.

Human rights advocates have long argued that transparency in detention procedures is essential to prevent abuse and ensure adherence to national and international law.
