“A True Patriot Builds, Not Destroys the Nation”: Tanzania’s Suluhu Vows to Protect Nation Amid Election Unrest

President-elect Samia Suluhu Hassan has called for calm and unity in Tanzania after being declared the winner of the country’s disputed general election.

Addressing citizens shortly after her victory was announced, Suluhu condemned the wave of demonstrations that have swept through several cities, describing them as acts that undermine the spirit of nation-building.

In her remarks, Suluhu emphasized that patriotism should be measured by actions that preserve rather than destroy the nation.

“The protests that took place, especially in cities like Dar es Salaam, Arusha, Mwanza, Mbeya, and Songwe, were in no way supported or guided by patriotism. A true patriot builds a country and does not destroy a nation built through the hard work and sweat of its citizens," she stated.

The elections, which have been marred by controversy and reports of unrest, have drawn widespread attention across the region.

Security forces were deployed to contain protests sparked by opposition supporters alleging vote rigging and suppression during the polls.

Despite the tension, Suluhu maintained that her government would prioritize stability and national cohesion.

“What I want to make clear is that when it comes to the safety of the country and the unity of the United Republic of Tanzania, there is no alternative but to use all lawful and protective measures to keep the nation safe,” she stated.

Her message appeared directed at both protesters and political leaders urging for calm amid the ongoing disputes.

Suluhu also expressed disappointment over the violence witnessed during and after the voting process, saying such acts erode democratic progress.

“It is my belief, and that of all of us who participated in the elections, as well as the majority of Tanzanians, that we are deeply saddened by these acts. They do not build strong foundations for democracy in our country,” she said, appealing to citizens to stand together and protect our nation.

Her message positions peace and national identity as central pillars for the country’s future after one of its most divisive elections in recent years.
