The Odinga family marked a historic and emotional transition on Friday as Raila Odinga Junior was officially installed as the new head of the family, following the passing of his father, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a Facebook post, Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga described the day as “a deeply symbolic moment” that blended grief, continuity, and cultural pride.

The ceremony took place at the family’s Opoda home in Bondo, followed by a procession to Kango ka Jaramogi, the ancestral home of the Odinga lineage.

According to Luo customs, the occasion featured the liedo ceremony — a traditional shaving ritual that marks the end of mourning and ushers in new leadership within a homestead.

The event was characterized by song, dance, and communal celebration, underscoring the enduring cultural heritage of the Luo people.

Ruth Odinga noted that Raila Junior’s head was shaved as a symbol of renewal and continuity, a sacred act meant to restore balance and leadership in the family after loss.

She highlighted that Junior now steps into a position once held by his late brother, Fidel Odinga, who passed away in 2015.

“This moment, both emotional and powerful, was a reminder that while we grieve, life must go on, and leadership within the family must continue,” she wrote.

Expressing gratitude to those who supported the family, Ruth called for divine guidance for Junior as he assumes his new role.

“May God grant Junior wisdom, strength, and grace as he takes up this important responsibility,” she concluded.

The installation signifies the continuation of the Odinga family’s storied legacy — one rooted in leadership, tradition, and resilience.
