Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado has dedicated her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to the people of Venezuela and former U.S. President Donald Trump, calling the award a recognition of her country’s long struggle for freedom and democracy.
In a statement shared on X, Machado said the Nobel Peace Prize symbolizes hope for millions of Venezuelans seeking political change after years of repression under President Nicolás Maduro’s rule.
“This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom,” she wrote.
Machado expressed optimism about Venezuela’s democratic future, describing the country as being on the threshold of victory.
She appealed to international partners to continue supporting her movement, naming Trump and the people of the United States among her principal allies.
“We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy,” she stated.
Her direct acknowledgment of Trump’s role in backing Venezuela’s opposition drew attention internationally, marking a rare instance of a Nobel laureate publicly dedicating the award to a former political leader.
Machado has long been a vocal critic of the Maduro administration, which has faced accusations of electoral manipulation, human rights abuses, and economic mismanagement.
The Nobel Committee announced her as the 2025 Peace Prize laureate for her commitment to democratic values and nonviolent resistance in the face of authoritarianism.
The committee said her struggle reflects the global decline of democratic freedoms and praised her for embodying the courage of those who demand accountability.
