Maraga Named UGM Party Leader, to Vie for Presidency in 2027

Former Chief Justice David Maraga has officially joined active politics after being unveiled as the party leader and presidential flag bearer of the United Green Movement (UGM).

Maraga, who served as Kenya’s Chief Justice between 2016 and 2021, announced his new political path on Thursday, stating that UGM’s ideology resonates with his long-held Ukatiba philosophy, which champions constitutionalism, integrity, and accountability in governance.

“I am honored to join the United Green Movement, one of the few political parties whose ideology and values align with my Ukatiba philosophy,” Maraga said in a statement posted on X shortly after the announcement.

The retired CJ outlined the party’s immediate priorities, including campaigning for UGM candidates in upcoming by-elections, pushing for increased voter registration, and ensuring the inclusion of Kenyans in the diaspora in the electoral process.

He pledged to lead a value-based “People’s Campaign” ahead of the 2027 General Election.

UGM, a smaller but vocal political outfit with roots in environmental and social justice activism, has now positioned itself as a vehicle for Maraga’s presidential ambition.

The move marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, as Maraga joins a crowded field of aspirants eyeing the presidency in 2027.

Political observers note that Maraga’s entry could attract a bloc of voters disillusioned with traditional party politics, particularly those drawn to his reputation for integrity during his tenure at the Judiciary.

While UGM has limited national reach, Maraga’s candidacy is expected to inject momentum into the party’s grassroots mobilization, especially as it seeks to expand its footprint ahead of the polls.

With the declaration, the former CJ now embarks on a new journey, transitioning from judicial robes to the campaign trail, where he will test his appeal among Kenyans as a reform-driven presidential hopeful.
