Kikopey Tragedy Rekindles Road Safety Debate as First Lady Consoles Bereaved Family

The deaths of 16 family members in the Kikopey road accident have reignited concerns over the safety of Kenya’s highways, with First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto urging authorities and citizens alike to confront the persistent menace of road carnage.

Speaking at a memorial service held at St. Mathews Kahiga Catholic Church in Murang’a County, the First Lady said the loss was not only a personal tragedy for the family but also a national wake-up call.

“This single accident wiped out an entire generation in one family. We must ask ourselves how many more lives we will lose before decisive action is taken,” Mama Rachel Ruto told mourners.

The crash, which occurred last week along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway, added to the grim statistics associated with the notorious Kikopey stretch, where deadly collisions have been reported repeatedly over the years.

At the service, Mama Rachel joined clergy, relatives, and the community in prayer, but she also stressed the urgent need for road reforms.

She appealed for stronger enforcement of traffic laws, better driver discipline, and infrastructural improvements to reduce accidents.

“The silence left in homes, the empty chairs at the table, and the laughter that will never be heard again are painful reminders of the cost of inaction. As a country, we must do everything possible to stop such tragedies from repeating themselves,” she said.
