PLP leader Martha Karua has accused President William Ruto and sections of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) of exploiting the funeral of the late Raila Odinga for political gain, describing the event as a “choreographed show of unity” rather than a moment of national mourning.
Speaking during a morning interview on Spice FM, Karua said the tone of the ceremony suggested a political agenda aimed at cementing new alliances rather than honoring the memory of the late opposition leader.
“If you listen to Dr. William Ruto, you would think he and Raila Odinga shared similar ideals — but that’s far from the truth. He represents something completely different,” she said.
She criticized what she called “a coordinated performance” by some ODM leaders who, according to her, seemed more focused on praising their growing ties with the State than reflecting on Odinga’s legacy. “It was as if they forgot they were at a funeral,” Karua remarked.
“Was it Raila’s burial or an endorsement ceremony between ODM and Ruto?”
The former Justice Minister, who was Raila’s running mate in the 2022 general election, also expressed disappointment over being denied a chance to speak, saying that inclusivity and respect for diverse opinions would have better reflected Odinga’s democratic spirit.
“They could have allowed one or two members from the opposition to express their views,” she said. “It would have made sense to give me time to speak as his running mate.”
