Kileleshwa Ward Member of County Assembly Robert Alai has publicly rebuked former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for skipping major ceremonies marking the farewell to opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Alai's comments came via a post on X, highlighting Gachagua's no-show at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) upon the arrival of Odinga's body, the public viewing at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, and the state funeral at Nyayo National Stadium on Friday.
The MCA described the absences as a sign of deeper political rifts amid national mourning.Raila Odinga, a towering figure in Kenyan politics for over five decades, passed away unexpectedly last week, prompting widespread tributes across the political spectrum.
His body was repatriated from abroad and laid in state at Kasarani, drawing thousands of Kenyans from all walks of life.
The funeral at Nyayo Stadium, attended by President William Ruto and other leaders, underscored Odinga's legacy as a champion of democracy and multi-party reforms. In his X post, Alai urged Gachagua to reflect on his conduct.
"Rigathi Gachagua must realise that he is toxic that he can’t celebrate a once in a lifetime leader who is being celebrated by even his worst political enemies," Alai wrote.
"He needs to check himself into a rehab and become Kenyan first. Otherwise, he will make his current supporters the victims of his politics."
Political analysts noted that Gachagua's recent fallout with the Kenya Kwanza administration may have contributed to the perceived snub, though his office has yet to respond.
