Kenya Airways has confirmed that all passengers and crew aboard flight KQ784 are safe after the aircraft experienced a tyre burst upon landing in Cape Town, South Africa, on Tuesday, August 4.
In a statement issued by the national carrier, the incident occurred at approximately 3:30pm local time after the Nairobi-bound flight landed at Cape Town International Airport.
The airline said the aircraft had been operating a scheduled service from Nairobi when the tyre burst happened during landing.
“The crew acted in accordance with their safety training. All passengers and crew safely disembarked and were taken to the airport terminal,” the airline said.
No injuries were reported, with Kenya Airways emphasising that the safety and well-being of passengers and crew remained its top priority.
The incident, however, disrupted return travel plans, forcing the airline to cancel flight KQ785, which was scheduled to depart from Cape Town back to Nairobi.
The airline said its engineers and technical teams had been deployed to assess and repair the aircraft before it can resume operations.
The development mirrors aviation safety protocols where aircraft are grounded for inspection following mechanical incidents, even when landings are completed without further complications.
Kenya Airways apologised to affected passengers for the inconvenience caused, noting that efforts were underway to provide assistance and alternative arrangements where necessary.
“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this incident has caused. We thank our customers for their patience, cooperation and support, and our crew for their professionalism,” the statement read.
Affected passengers have been advised to contact the airline’s customer service channels for support, including rebooking and updates on flight schedules.
Aviation reports indicate that despite the tyre burst, the aircraft landed safely and evacuation procedures were conducted without incident, underscoring adherence to safety standards.
The Cape Town incident adds to a series of operational disruptions on the Nairobi–Cape Town route in recent months, though the airline has consistently maintained that safety protocols are strictly followed in all circumstances.
