President William Ruto is reportedly navigating a delicate political balancing act over his choice of deputy president for the 2027 elections, as party dynamics and regional interests threaten to complicate his reelection strategy.
Political analyst Martin Andati weighed in on the emerging tussle, highlighting the tricky scenario Ruto faces.
“It puts him in a very awkward position as sacking Kindiki would harden the resolve of the mountain to vote against him and lose whatever little support that remains there,” Andati told the Star newspaper.
Ruto’s current deputy position is held by Justice Minister Kithure Kindiki, a figure whose influence in Mount Kenya remains significant. Removing him could alienate key supporters at a time when Ruto is seeking to consolidate his base ahead of the 2027 polls.
At the same time, the Kenya Kwanza coalition is under pressure from the opposition party ODM, whose leaders have indicated that a deputy president slot is one of their minimum conditions for supporting Ruto’s bid.
Andati noted the potential challenges: “If he gives it to ODM, then who takes it? Is it Oburu Oginga, Gladys Wanga, Joho, Wycliffe Oparanya or who? Likewise, Musalia would feel slighted if it were taken away from Kindiki and given to ODM, yet he stood with Ruto at a very critical moment.”
The comments underline the complexity of power-sharing calculations in Kenya’s multi-party landscape, where regional and ethnic considerations often shape electoral alliances.
For Ruto, the challenge is maintaining loyalty among his current allies while also broadening his support to include ODM’s significant voter base in Nyanza and other regions.
Political observers argue that any decision regarding the deputy position could have lasting consequences on Ruto’s 2027 campaign.
With the president publicly declaring his intent to secure a decisive victory, balancing competing interests has become a priority.
Missteps could risk alienating core supporters while failing to appease coalition partners, potentially weakening his prospects.
As the jockeying for the deputy presidency continues, all eyes remain on Ruto to see whether he opts for loyalty, regional balance, or a strategic alliance with ODM, a decision that could define the dynamics of Kenya’s next general election.
