The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju after he resurfaced on Monday following a two-day disappearance, setting the stage for a formal probe into what police now describe as a potentially fabricated incident.

DCI Director General Mohamed Amin confirmed that Tuju is currently being held at Karen Police Station, where he is expected to record a detailed statement explaining the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Authorities are seeking clarity on his movements between Saturday and Monday, including the abandonment of his vehicle and reports initially filed by his family.

Amin stated that Tuju will be required to provide a “comprehensive account” covering key aspects of the case, including the identities of individuals he described as “good Samaritans” who allegedly accommodated him at an undisclosed location in Kiambu County.

“The National Police Service views the provision of false information to authorities as a very serious offence,” Amin said, signaling the possibility of further legal action depending on the outcome of investigations.

The DCI boss further warned that the incident may not be isolated, revealing that investigators have documented several similar cases involving what he termed as staged disappearances or false abduction claims.

According to Amin, some of these incidents have involved high-profile individuals, including politically exposed persons.

He cautioned that such actions risk eroding public confidence in law enforcement agencies, particularly at a time when concerns over insecurity and alleged abductions remain a sensitive national issue.

The development comes amid heightened scrutiny over cases of enforced disappearances and extrajudicial conduct in Kenya, which have drawn criticism from civil society groups and political leaders in recent months.

Tuju’s reappearance had initially sparked relief among his supporters and family members, who had reported him missing under unclear circumstances.

However, the latest police position introduces a new dimension to the case, raising questions about the credibility of the initial claims.

Investigations are ongoing, with authorities indicating that further updates will depend on the statement Tuju records and any corroborating evidence gathered.
