The Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, has accused former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju of orchestrating his own disappearance, in a dramatic twist following Tuju’s brief period of being reported missing.
Tuju had reportedly gone missing on Saturday, sparking concern among family, political allies, and sections of the public.
However, he resurfaced on Monday, prompting swift action and a detailed briefing from investigators who dismissed claims of abduction.
Addressing the press on Monday, Amin described the incident as a calculated attempt to mislead the public and discredit law enforcement agencies.
He stated that Tuju’s conduct appeared to be “a deliberate effort to deceive the public, generate unwarranted sympathy, and undermine the integrity of the National Police Service and the DCI for apparent political or personal motives.”
According to the DCI boss, investigators had been pursuing leads that increasingly pointed to inconsistencies in the alleged abduction narrative.
He noted that law enforcement agencies were closing in on what he termed as the “truth” before Tuju resurfaced.
“When confronted with the reality that police were closing in on the truth and that his deception could no longer be sustained, Mr. Tuju chose to resurface,” Amin said.
“This confirms our earlier well-founded suspicion that this was a carefully staged disappearance rather than a genuine case of abduction.”
The allegations have raised fresh questions about the motives behind the incident, particularly in the context of Kenya’s heightened political climate where claims of abductions and enforced disappearances have been a matter of public concern.
Amin emphasized that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains committed to upholding the rule of law and warned against attempts to manipulate security agencies for personal or political gain.
He added that appropriate legal action could be taken following the conclusion of investigations.
Tuju has yet to publicly respond to the accusations by the DCI, leaving uncertainty around his version of events.
His sudden disappearance and reappearance have already triggered widespread debate, with some calling for a thorough and transparent probe to establish the full circumstances.
The case now places both Tuju and investigative agencies under scrutiny, as Kenyans await further details on what could become a significant test of public trust in security institutions.
