Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya remains away from public duties after sustaining a leg injury during the Christmas period, which reportedly left him with a broken leg. County officials say he has been advised to rest and limit movement to aid recovery.

Natembeya’s absence from official events, including the memorial service for former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, attracted attention.

Pius Gumo, the county Lands and Housing CECM, confirmed the governor could not attend due to his injuries and was focused on recuperation.

The situation has also sparked humour in political circles.

Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai jokingly commented that “torch imeangukia Natembeya”, a quip referencing earlier discussions about burying Jirongo with a torch to symbolise that anyone involved in an unnatural death would be affected.

Governor Natembeya made a brief public appearance on December 31, attending a Governors’ Cup event in Kitale with a leg brace and walking aid, assuring supporters he was recovering well and thanking them for their prayers.

County aides say Natembeya will fully resume duties only after medical clearance, noting that while the injury is serious, it is not life-threatening, and he remains committed to leading the county despite the temporary setback.
