Machakos police have recovered a large quantity of suspected narcotics after a suspect fled during a routine patrol in Ekalakala Market, officials said.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers from Ekalakala Police Station noticed an individual carrying a large bag under suspicious circumstances on Wednesday.

On spotting the officers, the suspect abandoned the bag and ran, evading arrest.

A subsequent search of the bag uncovered 49 brooms containing suspected cannabis, seven kilograms of loose cannabis, and 25 packets of rolling papers.

Police said the quantity and packaging suggested the drugs were intended for distribution rather than personal use.

Investigations are underway to trace the suspect and any accomplices involved in the trafficking operation.

Authorities have secured the recovered items as evidence.

The NPS reiterated its commitment to maintaining public safety through sustained patrols, intelligence-led operations, and prompt responses to criminal activity.

Residents were urged to cooperate with law enforcement by providing information that could help curb drug trafficking in their communities.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns over narcotics circulation in market centres, prompting police to intensify surveillance and crackdowns in high-risk areas.
