Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday used a high-profile family event in Uasin Gishu County to deliver a strong message to drug traffickers, signaling the government’s intensified crackdown on substance abuse.

Murkomen spoke at the engagement ceremony of Sandra Chebichii and Brian Kemboi in Kimumu, an event attended by President William Ruto, senior leaders, and families of prominent figures including Supreme Court Judge Joseph Sergon, Professor Phyllis Bartoo, and Thomas and Christine Cherutich.

The couple, both based in Australia, was described by Murkomen as a model of ambition, discipline, and strong parenting.

In remarks shared on X, Murkomen reflected on the sacrifices parents make to ensure their children succeed academically, professionally, and in family life.

He stressed that these efforts are increasingly threatened by the scourge of alcohol and drug abuse, which undermines Kenya’s youth and productive workforce.

Highlighting the government’s commitment, Murkomen announced that 2025 has been declared a year focused on liberating the country from drug and substance abuse.

He issued a direct warning to drug barons and distributors of adulterated ethanol, stating that their operations would face decisive action from law enforcement agencies.

“Kenya cannot achieve its vision of a first-world nation if our most productive population remains trapped in addiction,” Murkomen said.

He emphasized that safeguarding young people from drugs is essential to building a healthy, skilled, and competitive workforce.

The Interior CS linked the anti-drug campaign to broader national development goals, noting that social stability, public health, and economic growth are interdependent.

By using a family celebration as a platform, Murkomen reinforced the government’s resolve to protect Kenyan families from the harms of substance abuse while celebrating success stories that inspire the nation.
