Journalists from Wajir, Garissa, and Mandera counties withdrew from hosting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Thursday interview, citing intense political pressure and threats to personal safety.

According to journalist Hassan Kashuqji, some reporters faced intimidation through family members, while others received direct calls from high-ranking officials warning them against participating.

Those employed by county governments feared losing their jobs, a concern that heavily influenced the decision to step back despite prior arrangements.

Media houses also raised regulatory concerns. Broadcasting the interview could have triggered government action, including potential revocation of licenses—a risk many stations were unwilling to take.

The fear of losing operational licenses led several traditional outlets to opt for self-censorship.

In contrast, online media platforms remained undeterred.

Digital channels aired the interview, ensuring broad public access and engagement.

Kashuqji noted that these platforms’ courage helped maintain the flow of information despite pressures on traditional media.

The interview proceeded as scheduled, with Gachagua addressing pressing issues affecting the public.

His remarks highlighted challenges on the ground and reflected ongoing political and social realities in Northern Kenya.
