Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has revealed that the late former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo privately warned her that her time in President William Ruto’s Cabinet would be short, advice she says later proved accurate.
Speaking during a condolence visit to Jirongo’s family, Nakhumicha said the veteran politician hinted at her impending exit at the height of tensions between the Ministry of Health and doctors during her tenure.
Jirongo died in a road accident on December 13 and was laid to rest on Tuesday, December 30.
Nakhumicha said she had a personal connection with Jirongo’s family and felt compelled to mourn with them.
She described Jirongo as a respected figure among the Luhya community and a leader whose political instincts were sharp.
According to the former CS, she met Jirongo twice. The first encounter was before she joined active politics, when he offered her general advice.
The second meeting came during a difficult period in office, when prolonged disputes with healthcare workers had put her under intense political pressure.
She recalled Jirongo telling her that what she was experiencing was political and not unique.
He reportedly advised her to prepare for life beyond the Cabinet, warning that the position would not last long despite her efforts and the pride she had brought to the Luhya community.

Nakhumicha said the conversation prompted her to start planning early, noting that Jirongo appeared to have “seen the future.”
She later exited the Cabinet following changes by President Ruto.
Reflecting on her current path, Nakhumicha said she has since been appointed as an ambassador, terming it a new chapter guided by faith.
She also hinted at a possible return to active engagement in Trans Nzoia politics, saying she would be back to plan the next steps with local leaders.
Her remarks have renewed discussion about the behind-the-scenes political calculations that often shape Cabinet appointments and exits in Kenya’s political landscape.
