COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has opened up about a personal encounter with the late politician Cyrus Jirongo, revealing a conversation that led to him giving Jirongo a Sh100 million friendly loan.

Speaking during a Citizen TV interview on Wednesday night, Atwoli described the depth of their friendship, which spanned nearly 30 years.

He said he was still reeling from the recent loss of Raila Odinga when he received the heartbreaking news of Jirongo’s death in a road accident on December 13, 2025.

“At first, I could not believe it. Early in the morning, I was told Cyrus is no more. It was very sad for me. We had been close friends for almost three decades,” Atwoli recalled.

He went on to narrate the moment Jirongo approached him for financial support. Atwoli said Jirongo had secured a deal that would pay him over Sh200 million but requested a friendly loan of Sh100 million.

“I could not hesitate with Cyrus. He had the best heart, always thinking of Kenyans first. He could solve problems quickly and was generous to everyone,” he said.

Atwoli highlighted that their relationship went beyond money. It was built on trust, loyalty, and mutual respect.

He described Jirongo as not just a politician but a friend and a problem solver who always prioritized others.

The late Jirongo’s passing has left a notable gap in Kenya’s political scene.

Friends and associates remember him for his generosity, quick thinking, and commitment to public service, as well as the personal bonds he cultivated over the years.

Atwoli’s revelation underscores the human side of Jirongo, painting a portrait of a man who valued friendship, acted with generosity, and remained committed to supporting those around him—even in financial matters.
