New Twist in Jirongo Death as Governance Expert Says CCTV Footage Tells a Different Story From Driver's Account

Governance and security expert Eric Okeyo on Thursday challenged the official account given by a bus driver involved in the death of former MP Cyrus Jirongo, saying CCTV footage contradicts key claims made after the crash.

Appearing on Citizen TV, Okeyo analysed surveillance video from Eagol Petrol Station on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway, which shows Jirongo’s white Mercedes stopping briefly at the station around 2:18 a.m. on December 13 before turning back onto the highway.

The bus, identified as a Climax Coaches vehicle, is seen approaching at speed and striking the Mercedes in a head‑on collision shortly after it rejoined the road.

The impact dragged the car for about 25 metres, leaving it mangled on the roadside.

In his post‑accident press interview, the bus driver claimed the collision happened while his vehicle was stationary.

Okeyo dismissed this, saying the CCTV clearly shows the bus was in motion at impact.

“This footage raises serious questions about the driver’s narrative,” Okeyo said. “What we see on camera does not align with the statement given to investigators.”

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are analysing the footage as part of a broader probe into the circumstances surrounding Jirongo’s death.
