Kenya’s media fraternity is mourning the sudden death of Festus Amimo, the respected head of Mayienga FM, following an announcement by the station early Sunday.

The veteran broadcaster, widely known for his work in Dholuo-language radio, had built a reputation as a thoughtful interviewer and mentor to younger journalists.

Siaya Governor James Orengo described Amimo as “a calm, collected, and truly gifted soul whose loss is a heavy blow to the entire media fraternity,” adding that his radio sessions were “marked by grace, depth, and unwavering respect for every guest”

He further paid tribute to Amimo as a personal friend, saying: “Shine on your path, my good friend, Wuod Awasi. Your voice and spirit will be dearly missed.”

Amimo’s career at Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) spanned over two decades, during which he rose from radio producer to station head at Mayienga FM.

He was best known for hosting the popular morning program Gari Mokinyi, which attracted listeners across Western Kenya and the wider Nyanza region, cementing his influence in vernacular broadcasting

Beyond his on-air presence, Amimo played a pivotal role in nurturing vernacular journalism and guiding upcoming talent through his leadership in the Luo Journalists Association.

Colleagues recall his professionalism and commitment to elevating the standards of community-focused broadcasting (KBC). His efforts also extended to social initiatives, including mobilizing support to fund education for needy students in the region.

The loss of Amimo highlights the broader significance of vernacular media in Kenya, where regional language stations serve as crucial platforms for political discourse, community engagement, and cultural preservation.

Mayienga FM has been particularly influential in shaping informed public opinion in Nyanza, a politically active region with a history of strong voter mobilization and civic participation.
