Nairobi-based lawyer Wahome Thuku has claimed that former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i is the only political figure genuinely committed to unseating President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In a statement shared on social media, Thuku said Matiang’i stands out from other opposition figures because he has a clear plan for governance should he replace Ruto.
Thuku attributed his view to personal interactions with the former Cabinet secretary, saying he had spent time discussing politics and leadership with him.
“The only genuine leader who wants William Samoei Ruto out is Dr Fred Matiang’i,” Thuku wrote, adding that other prominent figures positioning themselves as critics of the president lack commitment to change.
Thuku accused several opposition-aligned leaders, whom he described as “tribal kingpins,” of being power brokers rather than reform-minded politicians.
According to him, such leaders are already preparing to negotiate for personal interests with President Ruto after the 2027 election, despite publicly appearing opposed to his leadership.
He further claimed that these leaders are creating the impression of a united effort to remove Ruto in order to maintain political relevance and mobilise public support locally and within the diaspora.
Thuku said this strategy was misleading and would eventually be exposed.
The lawyer also commented on the WanTam political movement, which emerged as a rallying call against President Ruto’s administration.
He argued that the momentum behind the movement has declined due to what he termed as political dishonesty among its promoters.
Thuku predicted that President Ruto would regain significant support in the Mt Kenya region during visits expected in late 2026 and 2027.
He suggested that shifting political loyalties would become evident as the election period draws closer.
