Kenya has begun a fresh round of bilateral discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran aimed at strengthening cooperation in the Information, Communications and Digital Technology sector.

The meeting took place today and was led by ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo.

According to Kabogo, the talks focused on expanding joint work in several priority areas, including digital infrastructure development, capacity building, innovation, and improved delivery of ICT services.

The engagement builds on existing cooperation agreements between the two nations, which have included technology exchanges, investment opportunities, and support for Kenya’s growing digital ecosystem.

Kenya and Iran have maintained active collaboration in science and technology over the years, with earlier discussions touching on education partnerships, tech research and start-up support.

The latest meeting signals renewed interest in leveraging those frameworks to address emerging digital needs, especially as Kenya continues to scale up its digital transformation agenda.

Kabogo stated that both countries reaffirmed their commitment to using technology as a driver of economic growth and job creation.

He noted that the ministry is prioritising partnerships that can help expand digital access across counties, improve connectivity, and support innovation hubs that serve young entrepreneurs.

The meeting also explored opportunities for joint capacity development programmes, which could include training, knowledge exchange, and specialised technical support.

Such initiatives are expected to benefit government agencies and the private sector as Kenya works to strengthen cybersecurity, data management, and digital service delivery.

Iran has previously expressed interest in contributing to infrastructure projects and offering technological expertise in areas such as broadband development and software solutions.

Officials believe that enhanced cooperation may unlock additional investment and provide Kenya with new avenues for advancing digital services.

Kabogo emphasised that the ministry remains focused on partnerships that align with national priorities, including the government’s plan to expand digital learning, digitise public services, and support innovation-driven economic growth.

Both sides agreed to continue consultations through established Kenya–Iran frameworks and follow up on technical areas identified during today’s meeting.
