The Inspector-General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja has addressed public concerns regarding reports linking law enforcement officers to abductions, affirming that such actions are contrary to police duties.

Speaking on Friday, Kanja outlined the procedures the police follow in cases of missing persons and reassured the public that officers who violate the law face strict disciplinary measures.

Kanja emphasized that abduction does not form part of the police mandate.

“Every member of this service understands the duties of the police very clearly. If anyone strays from these duties, we will take appropriate action as guided by the laws,” he said during an interview.

He explained that investigations begin at the local police station once a missing person report is filed. Details of the individual, including identifying features, are communicated to stations across the country to ensure coordinated efforts.

According to Kanja, this process has enabled authorities to trace many missing persons successfully, while some individuals temporarily disappear and later resurface.

The IG’s remarks come against a backdrop of heightened public scrutiny over security operations in Kenya, particularly in urban centers where reports of missing persons have stirred concern.

The statement also aligns with past government efforts to reinforce transparency and accountability within the National Police Service, a key pillar in Kenya’s security framework since the reforms following the 2010 Constitution.

Kanja further clarified that police investigations proceed until a case reaches its logical conclusion.

“For every case reported of a missing person, the police have a duty and obligation to follow through until it is resolved,” he stated. This approach ensures adherence to legal frameworks while safeguarding citizens’ rights.

Officials encourage the public to report any suspicious activity or disappearance immediately, noting that timely information significantly enhances the effectiveness of investigations.

The IG’s briefing serves to reassure Kenyans that the police remain committed to lawful conduct while performing their duties across all regions of the country.
