Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has firmly rejected claims linking his 2027 presidential ambitions to former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking during a live interview on Spice FM on Wednesday, Matiang’i said he was pursuing the presidency out of his own conviction, not at the behest of anyone.
Matiang’i clarified that while he served under Uhuru’s administration, his past role in government should not be mistaken for political sponsorship.
“I cannot rewrite history. I served as a Cabinet Secretary under President Uhuru Kenyatta. Whether that makes me his project is a narrative that only divides us,” he said during the interview.
He went on to challenge those spreading the claims, accusing them of double standards. According to him, many of his critics who brand him as Uhuru’s “project” are the same individuals who privately seek the former president’s advice or endorsement.
“People may claim I am Uhuru’s project yet they are often the same ones seeking his endorsement or counsel,” he remarked.
Matiang’i also described Uhuru as a successful leader, insisting there was no shame in being associated with someone who had led the country well.
“President Uhuru was successful, and who wouldn’t want to be associated with a successful President? I am not running for president because he told me to. I am running for president because I want to,” he added.
