Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has weighed in on the presidential potential of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, urging him to adopt a structured and strategic approach if he is to mount a serious bid for the country’s top seat.
Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s #JKLive on Wednesday evening, Kang’ata emphasized that while Sifuna has shown promise, his path to the presidency must be anchored within a broader political framework.
His remarks come just days after he joined the Linda Mwananchi movement, signaling a shift in his political alignment.
Kang’ata noted that regional political dynamics will play a significant role in shaping the next election cycle.
He pointed to the growing influence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, popularly known as Riggy G, describing him as a dominant voice in the Mt Kenya region.
“Where I come from, Riggy G is strong; he has become the voice of the region, and I have no doubt that come the next election, he is going to exert his revenge,” Kang’ata stated, hinting at possible political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.
On Sifuna, the governor expressed support but cautioned against a premature or independent presidential run.
“For me, I am pushing for Sifuna; he has to be within a certain umbrella. He cannot go all the way without a certain umbrella,” he said.
Kang’ata advised the Nairobi senator to engage widely with political elders and organized groups to build consensus and legitimacy.
He also underscored the importance of timing in politics, suggesting that Sifuna should carefully assess when to make a presidential bid.
“I would want the best out of Sifuna. I would tell him not to go past a certain age, consult certain elders and groupings, and that is when he will become viable,” he added.
Crucially, Kang’ata stressed that any serious presidential contender must present a clear policy direction. He challenged Sifuna to develop a comprehensive manifesto and a detailed governance blueprint to appeal to voters nationally.
