Fresh details have emerged in the investigation into the fatal road accident that killed former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirming that the probe is nearing completion and will soon be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The agency noted that detectives have been piecing together events surrounding the incident through an extensive review of witness accounts, forensic findings, and other investigative leads.
Investigators have so far recorded statements from 28 individuals, a figure the DCI says reflects the breadth of the inquiry.
Among those interviewed are seven passengers who were travelling in the bus involved in the crash and later came forward to assist investigators.
The DCI added that National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula voluntarily recorded a statement during the early phase of the probe.
Also questioned were Vihiga Senator George Khaniri and his wife, Eunice Chelagat.
The couple visited the accident scene on the day of the incident and played a role in facilitating the transfer of Jirongo’s body from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital Mortuary to Lee Funeral Home, according to the investigators.
Medical findings have also shed light on the cause of death.
An autopsy established that Jirongo sustained severe crush injuries, including a broken sternum and internal organ lacerations affecting the heart, liver and kidneys.
The pathologist concluded that death resulted from multiple blunt force trauma injuries.
The agency warned that speculation or unverified claims could undermine the integrity of the investigation or unfairly harm individuals who have cooperated with detectives.
The DCI reiterated that the final inquiry file will be submitted to the DPP for review and any further action deemed necessary under the law, underscoring its commitment to impartial and expeditious investigations.
