Salasya Calls for Immediate Dissolution of Senate Over Failure to Protect Counties

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has called for the immediate dissolution of the Senate, accusing it of failing to defend county governments against what he described as neglect by the national administration.

In a post shared on X, Salasya expressed frustration over the alleged lack of development funds for counties, saying they have only been receiving money for salaries since July.

According to the MP, this situation has crippled service delivery and development projects across devolved units.

“I propose the Senate to be dissolved with immediate effect. How can the Senate fail to protect counties from this government that since July, counties only get monies for salaries to county employees with no development money from the national treasury,” Salasya posted.

He further claimed that the Electronic Government Procurement (EGP) system has paralyzed county procurement operations, preventing counties from implementing new projects.

“People are being paid without working because of a failed EGP that has stopped procurement in counties, yet the Senate is comfortable and eating taxpayers’ money,” he added.

Salasya’s remarks add to growing criticism over delayed disbursement of funds to county governments, an issue that has strained relations between the national and county administrations.

Governors have previously raised concerns about the Treasury’s failure to release funds on time, warning that counties could soon face a shutdown if the trend continues.

The Senate, which is mandated to protect the interests of counties, has not issued an official response to the MP’s proposal.

However, debates around the effectiveness of the EGP system and Treasury’s disbursement delays continue to dominate conversations among county leaders and legislators.
