Kileleshwa Ward MCA Robert Alai has sharply criticised former President Uhuru Kenyatta after he claimed that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election.

Uhuru made the remarks on Tuesday, September 22, during a Jubilee Party meeting in Nairobi, where he maintained that he remained convinced that Odinga had secured victory despite President William Ruto being declared the winner.

“We did everything to help Baba become President of the Republic of Kenya. He got the votes, and to this day I know that he is the one who won those votes,” Uhuru said. He added that he believed those involved knew how events unfolded after the election.

The former president also questioned how the Azimio coalition could have lost the presidency while securing a significant number of parliamentary seats and other elective positions.

His remarks have since triggered a fresh political confrontation, with Alai questioning Uhuru’s position as the former Commander-in-Chief during the transition of power.

“The then-Commander-in-Chief of all security services is telling you that he handed power to someone who didn’t win?” Alai said.

The Kileleshwa MCA further challenged Uhuru to explain whether he was serious about the claim, asking: “Ask him if he is drunk or just okay.”

Alai also turned his criticism to Uhuru’s personal appearance, making a disparaging reference to the former president’s weight and health while questioning his ability to offer Kenyans a better future.

His comments come as political debate over the 2022 presidential election intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The official 2022 results declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission gave Ruto 7,176,141 votes, representing 50.49 per cent, against Odinga’s 6,942,930 votes, or 48.85 per cent. The Supreme Court subsequently unanimously upheld Ruto’s victory after petitions challenging the results were filed.

UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar has also rejected Uhuru’s account, insisting that Ruto won the election decisively and accusing the retired president of failing to accept the outcome.

Uhuru’s latest intervention has therefore reopened a long-running political dispute over the 2022 election, with rival camps offering sharply different accounts of what happened after Kenyans cast their ballots.
