The African Union (AU) has voiced serious concern over reports that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was captured by American security forces, accompanied by military strikes on key Venezuelan institutions.

In a statement released on X, the continental bloc emphasized the importance of respecting international law and national sovereignty.

The AU reaffirmed its commitment to the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter, including the protection of territorial integrity and the right of peoples to self-determination.

It stressed that any resolution to Venezuela’s ongoing political and social challenges must come through dialogue among Venezuelans themselves.

“Peaceful settlement of disputes, adherence to constitutional frameworks, and constructive dialogue are essential to avoid escalation,” the AU statement said.

The organization called on all involved parties to act responsibly, exercise restraint, and respect international norms to maintain regional stability.

The Union also expressed solidarity with the people of Venezuela and reiterated its dedication to promoting peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations.

The AU warned that unilateral interventions could undermine both national sovereignty and regional security, urging all actors to prioritize diplomacy and negotiation.

The statement highlights the AU’s continued advocacy for conflict resolution through non-violent and inclusive processes.

It also shows the bloc’s view that external military actions risk deepening tensions and complicating efforts toward a sustainable political solution.

The statement by African Union has not been received in good faith, as several Africans took to the comment section to question why the agency is concerned about the development in another continent while Africa is facing its own problems.

Reactions:

Edmund Kagire: Sit this one out dears. There are levels to this thing.

MP UOT: But honestly when do you work on African issues, statement on Maduro when Samia killed thousands and you supported her is insane, regrettable and unfortunate. Whom do you serve, Africans or African dictators, or both?

Mohamed Hersi: Focus on Africa mess that you have failed to address and stop pretending that your opinion counts in another continent. In Africa for you its hear see no evil. Look at the violence meted to opposition in many African countries and you are totally silent. Just remain silent on matter Venuzuela its beyond your league.

Walugembe: AU just shut up. You couldn't save Tanzanian citizens when its dictator slaughtered them, you can save Ugandans undergoing oppression from a dictator and you're yapping to USA. Do you know how much Venezuelans are happy for America for taking our their oppressor?

Unathi: Eyi eyi eyi, where is your "grave concern" about the Sudan, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, DRC, etc?

Girma: Look at the timidity and absurdity of the African Union! It pleads to “All parties concerned to excessive caution and restraint.” There is only one party here. The other party is in jail, in handcuffs, 100% restrained. What is it talking about?
